Veterans Family Camp Weekend
By Maddy Burds, AmeriCorps Veterans Coordinator
Our fall season began on September 20 with our Veterans Family Camp. With the help of over 20 volunteers, our fall AmeriCorps members, as well as our general staff, we were able to serve 98 veterans and family members! The rain held off most of the weekend and the families were able to enjoy the days full of excitement all around camp and in the Wisconsin Dells.
As a first-time Veterans Family Camp attendee myself, it was amazing to watch the campgrounds being enjoyed by a different population than what I am used to seeing during summer sessions. Families were able to spend some quality time together, veterans bonded over their shared experiences, and friendships were made throughout camp.
Some of the highlights from the weekend were a trip to the ropes course, pumpkin carving, minute-to-win-it games, and the karaoke party on Saturday night! A special thank you to Namyun Kil, PhD, ICGID, CTRS, CFTG from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse who joined us and ran a Forest Therapy program Saturday morning which was enjoyed by many of the veterans and their family members.
On Saturday night, four veterans received Quilts of Valor and were recognized for their service during the ceremony. This is always a special occasion during these weekends. It’s wonderful that the veterans could be honored while being surrounded by loved ones and fellow veterans.
Our next Veterans Family Camp is scheduled for May 1-3, 2020 and spots are already filling up quickly! If you’re still interested in registering for the next session, click here for details. We are counting down the days until the spring weekend!
