Ten years ago we received a very important call from Camp America, our international staffing agency. An Easter Seals camp in Kentucky had suddenly closed, leaving several international staff with visas and no camp to attend. Camp America asked (as a fellow Easter Seals camp) if we would like some of the staff to come to Wisconsin and be a part of our team – you can imagine the response was a happy YES! Stevie Thomas was one of those staff members. She worked as a counselor that first summer in 2010, and has been the Wawbeek Program Director, Wawbeek Assistant Director and Co-director, Respite Camp Director, and was the Director of Camp Operations this past summer, working with both directors and all of the programs.
Stevie is a huge part of our camps, as she knows campers and families from both camps as well as the “ins and outs” of the entire property. Many people comment that it must be nice to always have summer. For the past
10 years, Stevie has spent six months in Wisconsin and six months in her hometown of Perth, Australia. But we all know that isn’t why Stevie keeps coming back. She says goodbye to her Australian family and friends each year to join her Wisconsin family and friends — giving her all to make Camp Wawbeek and Respite Camp the most fun and safe experience for our campers, families, and staff.
While in Australia, Stevie continues working in the non-profit world for an organization called Rocky Bay which provides day services for people of all abilities. She loves animals of all shapes and sizes (except spiders
and snakes, and understandably so; have you seen the ones you find in Australia?), Tic Tacs, all things Doctor Who, and riding the Merrimac Ferry. Thank you, Stevie, for all you have done over the past 10 years — we’ll see you next April!
