Easter Seals Wisconsin operates two year-round camps for people with disabilities in Wisconsin Dells, WI. The camps provide a much needed respite for caregivers living with the stress and responsibility of providing 24/7 care for their loved ones. The camps also provide therapeutic recreation for campers who often think of our camps as a home away from home. Camp Wawbeek provides lodging to campers during week-long summer sessions and weekend school year sessions. Campers often have temperature sensitivity and the availability of quality blankets is important for camper health and quality of life.
On January 16, 2012, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the 2011-12 Easter Seals Wisconsin AmeriCorps members will host a fleece-tie-blanket making service event at Camp Wawbeek. Campers, ages six to thirteen, who participated in our summer day camp and their families, along with local businesspeople, will be invited to attend and help the AmeriCorps members make twenty-five (25) colorful, warm blankets. Twenty (20) of the blankets will stay on-site to provide warmth and beauty for campers at Camp Wawbeek.
Camp Wawbeek also holds Family Camp for Veterans sessions bi-annually, providing an opportunity for veterans with disabilities and their families to connect in a fully-accessible setting. Because of our commitment to serving veterans and their families, five (5) of the blankets made will be sent to the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. The blankets will be delivered to the hospital by an AmeriCorps member and will be distributed to veterans with disabilities.
Camp Wawbeek campers and veterans at the Madison hospital will receive the direct benefit of the new blankets when they arrive at the camp or hospital to find brightly colored and warm fleece blankets in their lodging area. AmeriCorps members and volunteers will benefit as well through the experience of giving back to their community and learning about the impact service can have.
