Friends,
It is with great satisfaction that I add my comments to this year’s annual report. With your generous and continued support, the agency has completed a remarkable year with dramatic enhancements in virtually all programs, services, and financial stability. In light of our beleaguered economic environment, we couldn’t be more delighted or grateful; it gives us renewed energy and commitment to our mission of serving children, adults, and the families that struggle with physical and cognitive disability issues.
Camp Wawbeek continues to create life-long memories, friendships and growth experiences for young and old alike at increasing levels. The invaluable services provided by the Wisconsin Elks/Easter Seals Respite Camp, giving children with severe disabilities and their families a much-needed break, increased to 885 campers this year and yet waiting lists are still an unfortunate reality. The FARM Program, in concert with our partners at DVR and UW Extension, continues to help keep farmers with disabilities engaged in what is often the only enterprise and lifestyle they have ever known or wanted, at levels unheard of in other states. Although small by comparison, the Self-Employment Services program continues to return remarkable success rates, with 86% of all the businesses we have helped create over the past four years still in operation and contributing to the self-sufficiency of our clients. The Disability HelpLine and the Avenues to Understanding programs continue to work their way into the fabric of the disability community. The list could go on.
And while all that was taking place, the staff at Easter Seals Wisconsin was uniquely recognized with the award of two major federal grants, funding the design and implementation of national training programs for respite caregivers and for state vocational rehabilitation staff on assessment for successful employment outcomes in agriculture. There is no greater validation of one’s expertise than being asked by your peers and partners to teach it to others.
But, in the end, it is because of all of you that we are able to exist at all. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity; we simply cannot do this without you.
Tom Woodward
Chairman of the Board
Easter Seals Wisconsin
