The Easter Seals Wisconsin veterans program, called Healing Adventures, provides therapeutic recreational services for veterans with physical disabilities and their families in a camp setting. This program is maintained through partnerships with several organizations serving veterans and takes place at ESW Camp Wawbeek in Wisconsin Dells.
AmeriCorps is a program of the federal government’s Corporation for National and Community Service that engages more than 75,000 Americans in community service each year to meet critical needs in education, healthcare, economics, environment and veterans assistance.
The AmeriCorps Veterans Coordinator will provide outreach for the Healing Adventures program, collaborate with public and private organizations, and assist veterans with locating resources in their community. They will also recruit volunteers to serve at the Healing Adventures sessions. The member will receive extensive training in providing therapeutic recreation for people with disabilities.
The Veterans Coordinator must complete at least 300 hours of service between late September and mid-May (approximately 9 hours/week, M-F), and be present at the Healing Adventures weekend session. The position is based out of Easter Seals office in Madison. Additional events and two Saturday trainings are required. The member will receive a living allowance totaling $1,250 for the full term of service. Upon successful completion of the full term of service, the member is eligible for an education award totaling $1,132, which can be used to pay education costs or to repay qualified loans.
Applicants must have excellent organization and communication skills. He/she must be comfortable interacting with the public and speaking to small or large groups of people. This position is requires a high level of independence and eagerness to serve individuals with disabilities.
